The Modeling Scouting and Career Development Process: From Discovery to Internationalization

Model scouting and career development is an essential process in the fashion and modeling industry that focuses on discovering new talent, grooming them, and guiding them to success in their careers.

Scouting (Talent Discovery)

Scouting involves finding people with the potential to become models. This can be done in several ways:

● In person: Scouts often visit crowded places like shopping malls, events, or streets to identify people with unique characteristics or interesting profiles.

● Online: Social media is a key tool. Scouts review platforms like Instagram or TikTok in search of people with potential.

● Open casting: Some agencies organize events where anyone can come and be evaluated.

● Referrals: Sometimes, friends or family members of applicants recommend them to scouts or agencies.

Potential Assessment

Once a potential model has been identified, scouts evaluate several factors:

● Physical appearance: This includes body proportions, unique facial features, height, and photogenicity.

● Attitude and personality: It is crucial that the candidate be charismatic, adaptable, and willing to learn.

● On-camera performance: The ability to express oneself and pose in front of the camera is essential.

Career Development

If the applicant is accepted, the development process begins, which includes:

Training

● Posing and Runway: Learning how to pose in front of the camera and walk in fashion shows.

● Facial and Body Expression: Mastering how to convey emotions and tell stories with the body.

● Etiquette and Professionalism: Understanding how to conduct yourself in photoshoots, runway shows, and industry events.

Portfolio

● Creating a professional portfolio with quality photographs that showcase the model's versatility and potential. This includes:

○ Headshots.
○ Full-body shots.
○ Editorial or commercial images.

Networking

● Connecting the model with photographers, designers, brands, and other industry professionals.

● Presenting the model at casting calls and auditions for roles in runway shows, advertising campaigns, magazines, etc.

Career Management

● Establish short- and long-term goals for the model.

● Negotiate contracts with clients.

● Help the model build a personal brand, especially on social media.

Internationalization

If the model is successful locally, the agency can promote their career in international markets, sending them to work in cities such as New York, Paris, Milan, or Tokyo, where the modeling industry is most active.

Ongoing Support

The agency or scout guides the model throughout their career, offering support and advice, ensuring they take advantage of opportunities and make strategic decisions for their professional growth.

Mother Agency

A mother agency is the first agency to discover and sign a model. This agency is responsible for guiding the model from the beginning, helping them develop their skills, build their portfolio, and chart the first steps in their career. They also act as their main representative in the industry and, when they see that the model has the necessary potential, manage their placement in different markets.

What does a mother agency do?

● Discovery and development: The mother agency identifies talent, trains them, and creates their professional portfolio.

● Placement with international agencies: Once the model is ready, the mother agency seeks to connect them with agencies in different territories (New York, Paris, Milan, Tokyo, among others), which will be responsible for representing the model in those specific markets.

● Contract Management: The model signs a contract with the parent agency detailing the terms of their representation, including commission percentages that vary by territory.

● Relationship with Third-Party Agencies: When the model is placed with an agency in another market, the agency in that territory signs an agreement with the parent agency, acknowledging that the model was introduced by the latter. For example, in this case, THE ATELIER SCOUTING would be the parent agency, and the agreement stipulates that the agency in the territory where the model was placed agrees to pay the parent agency 10% of each job the model completes in that market.

Third-party agencies and collaborations

Third-party agencies are those in other markets that work directly with the model to secure work in their region. These agencies:

● Represent the model exclusively in their territory.

● Work in conjunction with the parent agency, respecting the terms of the established contract.

● Negotiate work with local clients, including runway shows, campaigns, and editorials.
